Fair teams in ten seconds

Research classrooms know the pain of “can I pick my group?” — a random group generator ends the negotiation instantly and visibly fairly. Paste names (Google Sheets / Excel paste works directly), pick by number of groups or by group size, and generate. Balanced mode keeps team sizes within one student.

Real classrooms have real constraints, so this generator supports the two rules teachers actually ask for:

  • Keep together — “Alice+Bob” forces those students into the same group (buddies, reading partners, co-teaching groups).
  • Keep apart — “Alice-Bob” guarantees separation; the generator swaps seats until they're in different groups.

Partner picker mode

Switch to Random pairs for think-pair-share, peer review, lab partners or “shoulder partner” warm-ups. One click pairs the whole class; when the count is odd the last student is shown as a clear solo you can attach to any pair.

Combine with the name wheel to pick who shares first, the timer to time the pair activity, and the scoreboard to score the results.

FAQ

How do I create random groups?

Paste your names (or load a saved class roster), choose Groups, set the number of groups or the group size, and press Generate. Every click reshuffles fairly.

What does “balanced” mean?

Balanced mode uses a snake draft (1,2,3…3,2,1) so group sizes differ by at most one student. Turn it off for a pure round-robin fill.

Can I force certain students together or apart?

Yes — under Advanced rules, list keep-together pairs like “Alice+Bob” (they will land in the same group) and keep-apart pairs like “Alice-Bob” (the generator swaps until they're separated).

Can it make random pairs / partners?

Yes — switch to the Random pairs mode for an instant partner-picker that splits the class into pairs (with one trio-solo shown clearly when the count is odd).

Is it really random?

Every shuffle uses the browser's cryptographic random source via crypto.getRandomValues — see the fairness page for a live statistical test.

Can I copy the groups?

Yes, the Copy button puts a formatted list (Group 1: …, Group 2: …) on your clipboard, ready for a slide or your grade book.
