Counting

Free printable counting worksheets — count the shapes, then circle the right number or write it in the box. Ranges 1–10 and 1–20, with an answer key.

Counting is the first math skill — make it calm and clear

Before addition ever makes sense, counting has to be automatic: touch each shape, say the number, stop at the last one. These sheets keep the layout predictable — five shapes per row, a new shape family every group — so the thinking goes into counting, not decoding the page. Circle-the-number builds recognition; write-the-number builds recall and numeral formation at the same time.

Counting to 20 without slipping is the perfect runway into the addition and subtraction worksheets, and the dice roller makes a great warm-up: roll, count the pips, roll again.

FAQ

Circle or write — which should I print?

Circle-the-number is the gentle first step: the child counts once, then recognizes the number among three near-neighbours. Write-the-number asks for real recall — the child must produce the numeral from nothing. Start with circling, switch to writing once number formation is solid.

How do the answer choices work?

The three wrong numbers are always close neighbours of the right one (within ±3), so guessing from a distance doesn't work — the child who miscounts by one or two sees their answer sitting right there in the row and learns to re-count carefully.

Why do the shapes change from group to group?

Each group uses a different outlined shape (stars, hearts, triangles…), never the same shape twice in a row. It keeps counting about the count — not about a favourite picture — and the outlined, ink-friendly style prints cleanly in black and white.

Is there an answer key?

Yes — tick "Include answer key": the answer page circles the correct number on every circle-style question and fills every write-in box, so children can mark their own work.

How do I print a worksheet or get a PDF?

Press "Download PDF" above the sheet to save a ready-to-print A4 file, or press "Print" to open your browser's print dialog and print it right away. Turning off the browser's "Headers and footers" option gives you the cleanest page.

Are these worksheets free? Can I use them in my classroom?

Yes — every worksheet on ClassCaddy is free for personal and classroom use: homework, math stations, morning work, tutoring, homeschool. You can print as many copies as you need. The only thing you can't do is sell the sheets or republish them as your own.
